By 1851, momentum had grown to fund a Soldiers’ Home in Washington, DC. General Winfield Scott was a hero in the Mexican-American War. He was paid reparations in lieu of ransacking Mexico City. So, Scott promptly paid off his troops and gave the rest to Congress - petitioning it to open a home for old and infirm soldiers.
In 1811, the US Navy urged Congress to pass legislation to create a Home in Philadelphia “for destitute Navy sailors and Marines.” An interim Naval Hospital opened in the former country mansion of the renowned Pemberton family in Philadelphia. This Hospital offered state-of-the-art care to our former seamen.
The AFRH has so much to offer America’s veterans and retired military. Here, there is much more than words or pictures could ever convey. From activities and amenities to camaraderie and creativity. From relaxation and recreation to safety and solace. In fact, you’ve got to see it all to believe it! So, we encourage you to visit an AFRH community in Gulfport, MS or Washington, DC. This way you’ll see your room, meet some friends, and experience the great perks that come with being an AFRH Resident.
The AFRH has been home to thousands of former enlisted, warrant officers, and limited duty officers. The people who have lived here have served in all five branches of the Armed Services in locations around the world. The jobs they've performed, the sacrifices they've made, and the histories they've witnessed make an incredible story. Below are just a few of our Residents' remarkable experiences. If you'd like to share your story, contact public.affairs@afrh.gov.
